I am being somewhat biased when I say you should buy a Zojirushi rice cooker. No, I do not work for them. But I may as well do. Zojirushi rice cookers are great. I have used them happily for about eight years. My most recent purchase was not because I had to replace my old machine. Rather, I just decided it was time for an upgrade.
This time I went for a 3 cup machine with their Induction Heating System. Currently in the U.S. and Canada there is only one such machine, the Zojirushi NP-GBC05. It is not a cheap rice cooker but it has a host of different cooking options and the Induction Heating means it can make great tasting rice.
Today I made just one cup of plain white Japanese rice and it came out perfectly. I had some for breakfast and then a couple of onigiri (rice balls) for lunch. The rice cooker itself was very easy to operate. For any of you that already have rice cooking appliances then it will be very simple for you. The most important part that you have to do is measure out the rice correctly, wash it and then add an appropriate amount of water.
The rest of the cooking operation is taken care of by the machine. It took less than 1 hour for my rice to be cooked to perfection. This is the beauty of getting a Zojirushi rice cooker.
Of course there are a host of other brands that you may want to consider. These include other Japanese brands such as Panasonic, Sanyo and Tiger. To be honest though, Zojirushi are the company with the widest range of cookers available outside their home country. So if you want to get the best then this is the brand to go for. Make sure you get an appropriate sized machine for your needs.
