I think it’s fair to say that we all think speeding tickets and other traffic tickets suck. No one likes to get them, they are annoying, sometimes embarrassing (particularly when we’re parked along the side of the road) and they are usually quite expensive. And for what, because some cop picked you out of all the cars on the highway going with the flow of traffic?
And, on top of it all, if you start racking up all kinds of traffic tickets, your insurance rates can take a hit. Car insurance, after all, is meant to protect people when they get into accidents. The more bad driving you do, the more the insurance company thinks you are a risk. And risks cost money.
So what can a traffic lawyer do for you? Well, they can do several things, but the main thing they can do, most of the time, is keep your driving record clean. Usually this happens in one of two ways – either the ticket is dismissed outright, or the ticket is reduced to what is referred to as a non-moving violation. This means that you still have to pay a fine, but the ticket is not reflected on your driving record as one that would increase your insurance rates.
Let’s say you get a Seattle speeding ticket and you don’t want your insurance rates to go up. If you call a traffic lawyer, like myself, we pour over the ticket, lawyer it up, and make sure that the cops can prove their case. We generally can make up a decent list of reasons why the ticket is no good, the evidence is no good, and the court should suppress what evidence there is. If there is no evidence, there is no case.
If that’s not possible, then the next best thing is getting the ticket reduced. This keeps your driving record clean and makes the prosecutor feel happy because they got a little bit of your money.
