With the improvements in the quality of artificial grass products over recent years, not to mention more of an acceptance by the general public, the market for artificial grass putting greens has taken off. The price and the fact that the surface closely resembles the greens from the golf course have meant that there is more of an incentive to install them.
There are still some arguments floating around against the use of synthetic grass as the surface for backyard putting greens with the main one being that you don’t play on synthetic grass when you hit the golf course. The thinking here is that if you play on natural grass greens you should be practicing on them too.
This is all well and good but many people have trouble getting to the driving range or the practice putting greens and so would not be able to practice at all. The level of maintenance required to ensure a synthetic grass putting green is constantly in a usable state is significantly less than that required for a natural grass putting green. The lawn mowing requirements alone are too horrendous to even contemplate.
As far as purchase and installation costs are concerned, the cost to install a natural grass putting green is not limited to the turf and laying it on a flat surface. Significant preparation goes into the creation of a functional putting green with numerous layers necessary just to ensure the drainage works properly.
One the other hand, installation of an artificial putting green also involves some excavation but nearly to the level required for a natural grass putting green. When all is said and done the artificial grass option is a far more logical choice to make. The costs are lower, the maintenance requirements are significantly fewer and the chances of stepping out onto your artificial grass and being able to practice virtually immediately point in favour of installing one in your backyard.
