Like humans pets seem to enjoy summer too and it is a good time to take note of your pet’s health and make sure that are in good condition. Older dogs and cats are more susceptible to developing diabetes and if your pet has gained weight and is getting older taking note of symptoms of diabetes in your pet is something to watch for. Most common is polyuria, or excessive urination. If your pet suddenly has to go out all of the time and is having accidents because they can’t get out often enough a closer look and testing by the veterinarian is probably in order.
Testing would consist of a blood test to see where the blood sugar levels are and how they react after eating and then also a urine test to check for sugar in the urine. If your pet is going a lot, they probably have sugar in the urine as what happens is that the kidneys are leaking sugar into the urine and taking water with it. This leads to more water intake and then more urination. Other signs can be listlessness and los of weight, even though their appetite is the same or increased.
Fortunately today help is available in the form of insulin injections. Veterinary formulations of insulin have been developed to help treat diabetic animals, where formerly there was not much in the way of medical intervention. Insulin is injected with U 40 syringes and the U 40 means that the insulin has 40 units per mL of formulation. Most veterinary insulin is U 40 strength insulin and a U 40 insulin syringe is matched to the insulin to make proper dosing easier.
Check out your pet’s condition this summer and make sure they are in tiptop shape. Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and healthy pets are great companions to share in the fun.
