Currently I’m only doing vending part time, but my hope is to one day have a vending route that can be either run by myself or my brother. I’ve been at it since 11/07, so basically just over 2 years. I had the misfortune of getting in right before the economy began having problems so some of the problems I experienced are due to factors beyond my control, but I do think that if I worked harder, I would be further along than I am right now. I’m having a hard time getting any growth momentum in my vending business, every time I get 5 machines placed, I lose 4 other locations so I’m just kind of slowly shuffling along. I need to take massive action, so that even with massive setbacks, I will be so far ahead of the curve that it won’t slow me down.
Sometimes when I’m feeling particularly optimistic, I like to view this “Great Recession” as a vending opportunity. A lot of smaller venders will undoubtedly become disillusioned, drop out of the business and I can then feed on their carcasses (metaphorically speaking of course). I’m trying to snap up small routes and used machines to hopefully expand into the recession. So far I haven’t found any routes worth buying, but I did manage to buy a lot consisting of 40 Oak double head machines for $50 a double head. This was a screaming good deal.
Now my problem is getting these machines on location. I hired a placer I’ve worked with before to get 20 machine locations, but he dropped the ball. I paid upfront for the 20 locations and got a discount rate, but it was for just over $800. In two months, he never got me one location. Granted it was over the Christmas/New Year’s holiday period, but when he started sending me emails about all the vacation days he and his team were taking, I snapped. I requested and received a complete refund – thank God. Since I’d worked with him before, I felt confident he wouldn’t rip me off, but this could have been a complete disaster. Lesson learned, pay for only a couple locations at a time.
So, is my “grow into the recession” theory valid or compete smack talk? Only time will tell. For now, I still need to find homes for my sweet Oak babies. It’s my intention to fake it ‘til I make it.
