Dolls are one of the most common and oldest types of toys and dolls have been found buried with children from civilizations going back thousands of years. It is unlikely that the appeal of dolls as playthings will ever decrease, and you can almost guarantee that any little girl you meet will have a selection of dolls, along with a baby doll pram and other accessories. Even children living in very poor countries will often have some kind of doll, often handmade from scraps of fabric and other materials lying around.
So why are dolls such a popular toy? These playthings are a miniature representation of a human being and so children are programmed to automatically respond to them from a young age. Very young girls will treat their dolls just like a baby, talking to them, feeding them and taking care of them without any prompting from the adults around them.
Children naturally imitate their parents to learn their essential social and emotional skills and they are likely to be even keener to play with their dolls if they have a baby brother or sister around. Small children love to help with household chores and pushing the pram of their younger sibling and will love playing with their very own dolls prams so they can feel just like the grownups.
As children get older they use their dolls for role play to practice out ideas for their future lives as adults. Dress up dolls like Barbie and Bratz are very popular with older girls and pre-teens as they act out scenarios that they are likely to encounter as they grow into young women. Their dolls will have boyfriends, cook dinner, go out with their friends and go to work just as the children themselves imagine they will do when they grow up.
Dolls are a vital toy to aid in the development of all children and playing with dolls should be encouraged from a young age.
