When most people think of outdoor path lights, they think of tree lined parks or homes with vast, lavish gardens. If you’re one of these people, you couldn’t be more wrong. Almost every home today has at least one or two places where you can make use of path lights. Path lights, when used in an system of overall garden lights will make your home look better, and will also make your house safer in the areas that are the most traveled as well.
If you think there’s nowhere in your house that can benefit from path lighting, think again? Do you have a driveway? You can illuminate it with a few well placed mushroom lamps. What about a path from your garage? Try placing some tiered lamps in that will show people the way. What about steps up to your porch or deck? Try installing recessed lighting to make sure that no one trips and falls in the middle of the night. Whatever kind of property you own, chances are there is at least one way that you can make use of path lighting.
When you’re installing path lighting, there are two major design elements to keep in mind. First, all of your path lights should be close to the ground and preferably reflect their light back down onto the ground. This keeps the light down where it’s useful to people and out of their eyes. Mushroom-shaped lamps are incredibly popular path light fixtures precisely because they are designed to do this incredibly well.
When you’re placing your lights, also make sure that you allow for a bit of overlap of the lights, but not too much. If you don’t overlap the lights, you risk leaving portions of your path dark. However, if you overlap the light emitted from the lights too much you’ll end up installing way too many lights fixtures. Try to find a happy medium.
Despite what your first impressions may be, almost any home can use path lighting. When you install the lights make sure that you place them close to the ground and allow for a little bit of overlap.
