Mike Leach is out as head coach at Texas Tech and Tommy Tuberville is in. The reasons for the change are numerous but do not change the fact that Tuberville is now the head guy in Lubbock. So what can everyone expect out of Tommy Tuberville that will be different than Mike Leach? Things will be different in two ways. The two coaches will be different off the field and on the field.
The way players dress and how they present themselves will be much different under Coach Tuberville. Coach Leach was much more lax about what players could wear. Coach Tuberville has rules about how players will dress and what they will and will not wear into the practice facility. For instance, under Mike Leach it was okay to wear earrings into the practice facility. That practice is not allowed under Coach Tuberville.
The difference between the two coaches will be most noticeable on the field. There has been talk about whether Coach Tuberville will keep Mike Leach’s offense or not. It really does not matter what the scheme is. There will be a difference in attitude this coming season. In previous years, Texas Tech was known for taking gambles almost no other team would take. That was Mike Leach’s personality, he took a lot of chances. Leach never met a fourth down he didn’t like.
Look for Coach Tuberville to take some calculated gambles but to not take nearly as many chances as Mike Leach did. That will change how Texas Tech plays as well as how other Big 12 play against Tech. Texas Football Coach Mac Brown is already on record as saying that he coached differently against Mike Leach than against other coaches. According to Brown, he felt he had to take more chances because Leach was going to take more chances.
Look for Coach Tuberville to be more selective in gambles. That may not be the worst thing in the world, especially against teams that Tech has a talent advantage over. It will change the personality of the football team. Doing it Mike Leach’s way, worked in Lubbock. Now we will see if Tommy Tuberville’s way will work as well.
