There are many kinds of foods that we can eat to help boost the immune system. However, to get the maximum benefits and to achieve overall good health and longevity we need to do more than just add these foods to our diet. We need to replace unhealthy foods altogether with healthy immune system boosting foods.
Processed foods contain added chemicals, preservatives and colorings, all of which are toxic and send the immune system into overtime. These unhealthy chemicals have to be broken down by the immune system so they can be safely excreted out of the body. However if the immune system can’t keep up (which is more often the case than not) it has to store these chemicals away in fat cells until it gets a break and can revisit the situation. The problem is that so many of us are eating so many presevatives and other chemicals that the immune system never gets that chance! As a result this condition has become a modern times epidemic and it is called toxicity. This fatigues the immune system greatly and makes us considerably more susceptible to virusus, bacterial infections and other pathogens. Toxicity also greatly improves our chances of developing cancer – not an improvement I want to make!
Besides processed foods – which have also been stripped of many of their original immune system boosting nutrients – intensively farmed or non-organic foods are also a problem to the immune system. The pesticides and herbicides sprayed on fruits and vegetables can be many times worse that the chemicals added to processed foods.
So which foods are great for boosting the immune system? Natural yogurt that contains live cultures and no added sugar is a fantastic choice for the improving our immunity to disease. The bacteria in yogurt increases the amount of friendly bacteria (gut flora) in our intestines. A healthy amount of friendly gut flora is out first line of defense against foreign invaders and also helps to properly digest food. If we are lacking in healthy gut flora then undigested food can actually make its way into the blood stream setting of immune responses and allergies.
Fruits and vegetables of any kind are also great for the immune system. They contain the important antioxidant nutrients that are essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. Vitamins A, C and E and the minerals zinc and selenium are such nutrients. A great way to give your self a super boost of these nutrients is to make your own homemade fruit juice recipes and vegetable juicer recipes.
