Although initially you may think that it is rather old fashioned to have a display cabinet in your house, in fact it can be a very useful feature in your room, being a talking point if filled with trophies and just a pleasant additional piece of furniture if you want to display your trinkets in it.
Glass display cabinets traditionally consist of a wooden or plastic base, with double doors at the top with shelves inside. In olden times, it was used to store your best china in so that your guests would be aware that they were getting the special set when they came for dinner. However, nowadays people are less interested in china and a glass display cabinet is usually used for display of trophies or trinkets.
When choosing a cabinet, bear in mind the following:
Size – since it is inevitable that you will alter your room around, make sure that you choose a cabinet that can fit in at least one appropriate place in your room.
Material – a wooden piece costs more than plastic and generally looks much more sophisticated. However, wood is susceptible to knocks and bumps whereas plastic is much more durable.
Glass – if you are going to have a piece, which has glass at the bottom as well as the top, make sure that it is shatterproof if you have children. Various glass tints can be purchased, although you need to make sure that any tint will enhance the material inside on display rather than distract.
Lighting – many modern glass display cabinets have in built lighting. Although increasing the price of the overall item, this enables the items on display to be illuminated and thus increases the overall look.
Overall, ignore your instincts that a glass display cabinet is for the old, if you have something that you want to show, then show it! – Anything interesting or unusual in a room always enhances!
