If you’ve ever made a large batch of jam, or canned an entire crop of tomatoes, you know how much of a pain the entire process is. It takes at least an entire day, and the work is definitely not easy. Luckily, the electric food strainer will help make the process much easier and faster. In this post I want to share some of the pros and cons of using one of these for your next canning project.
While these are called electric food strainers, they are much more closely related to the food mill. Essentially, you drop whatever you need smashed up into the top, it grinds it down, and the strainer catches the pulp. This is perfect for jam and tomato sauce where you need the juice separate from the seeds and pulp.
Before these were invented most people would spend their time with a spatula and a food strainer, smashing them to separate the juice from the pulp. Food mills were then invented and took some of the work out, but they are extremely awkward to use and keep upright. Electric food strainers sit up on the counter, so you don’t have to work to keep them functioning.
The biggest problem that you’ll run into with an electric strainer is that they are a pain in the butt to clean. Taking the parts out to clean is never easy, which will make you hesitate about using them. Another big problem with them is that they are dangerous. It’s not hard to get a finger caught down inside them, although they will usually come with some sort of plunger to push the food down inside.
If you have a kitchen supply store in your area that rents equipment, it’s usually a great idea to rent one of these the first time to see if you really need it. If you do, get it, if not rent one every time you need it!
