A lanyard is most commonly known as a strap that goes around your neck and holds a name badge or other small item, leaving your hands free to carry other things. We typically think of neck lanyards when the term lanyard is mentioned, but any strap that holds that works as a handle is really a lanyard. Neck lanyards are the most widely used as anyone that has attended a conference or worn a visitor’s badge can attest.
The style of a neck lanyard is normally a large loop that fits around your neck and a smaller loop at the opposite end that holds lanyard attachment hardware. The hardware is securely attached to the small loop ensuring that your items will not fall off or get lost.
Lanyard materials cover a gamut of materials with fabric of some type being the most common. Ball chain lanyards are available as lanyard material, but many companies go with a cloth lanyard that is wide enough to be imprinted with a company name or official logo.
Corded lanyards are used for cheaper lanyards as the material itself is not very expensive. The cord looks like a round shoelace and is quite effective for holding small items and name badges. Since it is a round cord a limitation is that, other than color, no advertising can be put on the lanyard.
Other fabrics used for making lanyards are cotton, polyester and nylon as well as some exotic “green” fabrics, like bamboo. All of these materials are typically made into different width straps to form the lanyard. Average widths vary from three-eighths to three-quarters of an inch wide. These different widths all lend themselves to some form of imprinting for promotional purposes.
The quality of the fabric determines the appropriate imprinting methods. Nylon lanyards will probably wear the longest, but may become shiny and not as nice looking with age and wear. With lots of choices in lanyards maybe the hardest choice is knowing where to begin.
