I am being somewhat biased when I say you should buy a Zojirushi rice cooker. No, I do not work for them. But I may as well do. Zojirushi rice cookers are great. I have used them happily for about eight years. My most recent purchase was not because I had to replace my old machine. Rather, I just decided it was time for an upgrade.
This time I went for a 3 cup machine with their Induction Heating System. Currently in the U.S. and Canada there is only one such machine, the Zojirushi NP-GBC05. It is not a cheap rice cooker but it has a host of different cooking options and the Induction Heating means it can make great tasting rice.
Today I… Read the rest

Most people think that quinoa is a grain, but in all reality it is actually a seed that is a relative of plants like spinach. It has been cultivated for over 6,000 years and was called the “mother grain” by the Incas. Because it is so healthy, this “super food” has begun gaining popularity all over the world.
One of the key benefits of quinoa is that it is an amazing source of vegetable protein. It is rare because quinoa has all eight of the amino acids that you need for your health. Of importance to note is that quinoa is a great source of lysine which is not found in significant quantities in foods like rice.
Lysine is critical for cellular repair. Quinoa is… Read the rest

A rice cooker is a wonderful invention. Of course they have been around for quite a good while now, though I still remember the days when rice was cooked on a pot on the stove. Now I own a Zojirushi rice cooker. If you are eating rice two or three times a day, cooking on the stove can become a little tedious. So, how do you know what the best brand is?
There are many different brands available. Depending on which country you live in, you may also find that it there are many local brands that are very good. To be honest, this is a fairly simple appliance that is very basic to operate once know generally know how to. Therefore, do not… Read the rest

If you’ve ever made a large batch of jam, or canned an entire crop of tomatoes, you know how much of a pain the entire process is. It takes at least an entire day, and the work is definitely not easy. Luckily, the electric food strainer will help make the process much easier and faster. In this post I want to share some of the pros and cons of using one of these for your next canning project.
While these are called electric food strainers, they are much more closely related to the food mill. Essentially, you drop whatever you need smashed up into the top, it grinds it down, and the strainer catches the pulp. This is perfect for jam and tomato sauce… Read the rest

Supplements and juices made from the acai berry have become extremely popular. Acai berry can be found in every health food store in its two popular forms – a dried fruit powder and as acai berry juice. So where does the acai berry come from and why is it so popular?
The acai berry tree only grows in the swamp lands surrounding the Amazon river. The majority of these trees grow in the Amazonian areas of Brazil but are also found in Belize and Peru. The difficulty of the terrain in which acai grows coupled with the very fast rate that acai berries ripen and spoil is the prime reason that the whole berry is not available outside southern and central America.

Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Recipe – Carrot & Greens
6 large carrots
1 stalk of celery
1 cup of broccoli heads
1 handful of cilantro
Top the carrots and wash all vegetables well. If the carrots are not organic then it is a good idea to peel them. Non-organically grown carrots are sprayed with pesticides that contain toxic heavy metals and other harmful chemicals. The skin of carrots is where most of these toxins end up.
Carrots juice provides some great benefits for our health. Carrots are the best known source of a nutrient called beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is a potent antioxidant… Read the rest

Some of us may have bad memories of being forced to eat cabbage as a child! However, it is one of the healthiest vegetables around and with a little creativity we can find tasty ways to gain the superb health benefits of this amazing vegetable.
Cabbage is member of the cruciferous family of vegetables along with broccoli and cauliflower. Cruciferous vegetables are all great sources of vitamin C, a nutrient that can help protect us from developing cancers and inhibit the spread of cancer that has already developed. Cabbage also contains potent phytochemical antioxidants that stimulate the liver to detoxify the body.

There are many kinds of foods that we can eat to help boost the immune system. However, to get the maximum benefits and to achieve overall good health and longevity we need to do more than just add these foods to our diet. We need to replace unhealthy foods altogether with healthy immune system boosting foods.
Processed foods contain added chemicals, preservatives and colorings, all of which are toxic and send the immune system into overtime. These unhealthy chemicals have to be broken down by the immune system so they can be safely excreted out of the body. However if the immune system can’t keep up (which is more often the case than not) it has to store these chemicals away in fat cells until… Read the rest
