Being Careful During the Black Mold Removal Process

Black mold is a very dangerous substance that can cause a myriad of health problems for you and your family if the mold is not addressed quickly.  These problems range from allergies, to more extreme respiratory problems.  If the mold has been discovered early and it hasn’t spread much, then it is usually a job that can be done by the home owner himself.  If the mold problem is quite large though, that is a situation where you’ll want to hire a professional black mold removal company to do the job.  If you are doing the project yourself, you’ll want to make sure that you take the proper precautions in order to protect yourself and your family from being further exposed to the black mold.

The first thing that you will want to do is to make sure that you get the right kind of cleaner.  A lot of people just want to use bleach because it is a common household product and something that they will usually have on hand.  The problem is that bleach doesn’t really kill the mold, it just discolors it so while it looks like the mold is gone, it really isn’t and will continue growing undetected.  I would recommend that you use a specialized mold cleaner that can be found in any grocery store cleaning products aisle or at your local hardware store.

Next, you’ll want to make sure that you seal off the room that the mold is in.  You do not want the spores to possibly get into the air and go throughout the house. Make sure that the room has proper ventilation, preferably a fan pointing out of an open window.  Then, make sure to use proper eye protection, a surgical mask so that you don’t breath in the mold spores, and some old clothes and gloves.  Then, take a wet washcloth or sponge and wet down the mold area by patting it down, no scrubbing.  This will get the black mold wet because when it is dry, it is more likely to become airborne when scrubbing.  Lastly, follow the instructions on the specific mold cleaner in order to fully clean up all of the black mold.

Following these tips will help you to be able to maximize your safety during a do it yourself black mold removal project.
