A Few Facts About Popping Pimples

Popping pimples is the standard way of dealing with ugly blackheads and whiteheads that appear on the skin. These blemishes are often associated with acne. As a general rule, this method of treating blemishes often causes additional scarring and discoloration of the skin. However, with some types of pimples, you can treat them with gentle pressure or suction.

The two major types of pimples are blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads are clogged with oil and secretions from the oil glands at the hair follicles. Whiteheads usually are a pus filled pocket. Whiteheads are slightly easier to pop, especially if you can keep your hands off them until they are “ripe”. That is much harder to do than it sounds.

Regardless of the type of pimple that you are treating, you should start by washing your hands carefully and washing the area where the pimples are appearing. If you don’t keep the area clean, you will possibly spread infection if there is any. You will have a more difficult time cleaning out the debris that is causing the problem in the first place.

After cleaning the surface of the skin, it’s a good idea to apply a warm wet cloth for a few minutes. This will soften the debris that is causing a blackhead and make it easier to pop the pimple. It will also soften the skin that is over a whitehead.

If you are going to go against the advice of the dermatologist then you have basically three techniques that could be used: suction, pressure around the blemish and pressure on the blemish. The professional advice will say not to get rid of acne by pimple popping, since it is likely that this will cause more scarring and darkened skin. If you you choose to use some of the tools that are available, you may have better results, as long as you use them according to the instructions.

Of all the various methods, pressure directly on the pimple is least effective. You can use a sterilized needle to gently open blocked blemish sites. Only apply enough pressure to clear the contents of your blemish, not to cause it to bleed.

Suction devices for popping pimples work somewhat like a mini vacuum. The outer rim of a device is placed against the skin to form an airtight seal. Then the plunger is pulled up and away from the skin. The contents of a blemish usually will come up with the plunger in the device. Whether you decide to pop your pimples or not, make sure you are careful with your skin. Treat your skin gently and don’t pick your pimples too much!
